Shrove Tuesday

Our next Community Hub takes place on Shrove Tuesday, 13 February, 9am until 12.30pm, during which we will be serving pancakes.

Shrove Tuesday, or more commonly known in the UK as Pancake Day, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday.

Lent is the period of 40 days that lead up to Easter and was traditionally a time of fasting. On Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were “shriven” (or absolved of their sins).

Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, which is why the date varies from year to year, generally falling between 3 February and 9 March.

Shrove Tuesday was the last day to use up eggs and fats before starting the Lenten fast, and pancakes were the perfect food to incorporate these ingredients.
